Set up a signals monitor

Updated Nov 20265 min read

A monitor checks LinkedIn on a schedule and flags posts that show a buying signal for your ICP: a trigger, a pain or intent. Each flagged post lands in your Signals inbox with the reason, and you can comment, message the author or save them to a list.

What you need

  • The Pro plan or higher. Pro includes 20 monitors, Business 40, Enterprise unlimited. See Monitor limits by plan.
  • A connected LinkedIn account. See Connect your LinkedIn account.
  • An ICP with buying triggers and pains, set up in Targeting. You can also judge posts for your whole company, or write custom instructions instead.

What you can watch

MonitorWatchesHow to start it
Keyword postsNew posts that contain your keywordsType keywords
PersonNew posts from a LinkedIn profile, and optionally their comments and job changesPaste one or more profile URLs, or upload a file
CompanyNew posts from one company pagePaste a company page URL
EventsNew LinkedIn events matching your keywordsType keywords, choose Events
JobsNew job posts matching your keywords or a LinkedIn jobs searchType keywords, choose Jobs

Pasting a post, event or group URL starts a watcher instead. See Watch a post.

Create a keyword monitor

  1. Open Signals. In New monitor: keywords or LinkedIn URL, type a keyword and press Enter. Add a few. Click a keyword to switch between exact phrase ("cold email") and words anywhere in the post.
  2. Keep Posts selected, and open Filters to set the look back, words to exclude and author titles. See Look back, exclude words and author titles.
  3. Press Search once to preview the posts the monitor would find. Searching is free. Adjust the keywords and filters until the preview looks right.
  4. Press Watch. In Watch for new results:
    • Give it a Monitor name.
    • Choose how often to Check every: from 1 to 24 hours.
    • Under Flag posts that matter for, pick the ICP to judge posts against, or your company as a whole.
    • Optional: Save people to a list. See Save post authors to a list.
  5. Press Create monitor. Its first check starts right away and usually takes 1–2 minutes.

Watch a person or a company

Paste their LinkedIn profile or company page URL into the same box and press Watch. For a company, add an optional Label and choose how often to Check every, from 30 minutes to 2 days.

A profile URL becomes a chip in the box. Press Watch and choose what to follow:

  • Watch for new posts: their posts, judged as signals.
  • Watch what they comment: the comments they write under other people's posts, judged as signals like their posts. The comment itself is judged, with the post it was under as context. Short reactions such as "Congrats!" or "Great post" are never signals.
  • Watch for job changes: when they change role or company.

Watch many people at once

  • Type or paste several profile URLs. Each one becomes a chip. Pasting a list (one per line, or separated by commas) adds them all.
  • Upload a file. Press Upload profiles, drop a CSV or XLSX and pick the column with the LinkedIn profile URLs. We find it for you when we can. Up to 1,000 profiles at a time.
  • From a lead list. Select people and press Monitor in the bar at the bottom, or use Add data → Monitor on LinkedIn. With nothing selected, this takes the people matching your filters, or the whole list.

Each way opens the same Watch profiles window. It shows how many profiles will be monitored before anything is created. Profiles you already watch and links that aren't profiles are skipped. If your plan's monitor limit leaves room for only some of them, the first ones are watched and the window tells you how many weren't. Each person counts as one monitor. See Monitor limits by plan.

To choose the ICP their posts are judged for, select the monitor and open Signal & capture settings (the settings icon). Under Signal Matching, pick an ICP, your whole company, or Custom instructions.

Tip

Start narrow. A few specific keywords and two or three author titles give you fewer, better signals than a broad search you have to sort through.

Alerts on a topic instead of buying signals

To follow what people say about a subject rather than look for buyers, for example "AI governance, AI regulation, responsible AI":

  1. Open Targeting. Under your company, press New topic alert.
  2. Give it a name and fill in Alert me when they talk about. Plain words work: topics, opinions, kinds of posts.
  3. Never alert on starts with routine social posts (congratulations, birthdays, weddings, work anniversaries). Add anything else you never want to hear about.
  4. When you watch people, choose the topic under Alert me on. For an existing monitor, open Edit monitor and pick it under Flag posts that matter for.

Posts and comments are judged by what they mean, not by keywords. A post or comment matches when its main point is your topic; a passing mention doesn't count. With Watch what they comment on, a comment matches only when the person's own words are about the topic, not just the post they commented on. Short reactions such as "Congrats!" never match.

Email alerts

After a check that finds new signals, you get one email for that monitor: "3 new signals from Dana Ross", with the first few and a Review signals button. A check that finds nothing sends nothing, so a monitor that checks every hour sends at most one email an hour. Turn it off per monitor in Edit monitor → Email me new signals.

Reading your signals

Open the Signals tab. Each flagged post shows ✦ Why it's a signal: its type (trigger, pain or intent), what it matched in the ICP, and whether the author matches the ICP. Posts that don't show a signal stay in the monitor's feed on the Monitors tab but aren't flagged.

The inbox has four tabs: All, New, Commented and Not relevant. See Comment, message or mark not relevant.

To get each new signal in another tool as it happens (your CRM, Zapier, Make, n8n), add a webhook. See Send signals to a webhook.

Checks and costs

Monitors check on their own. You can also run a check by hand with Check now in a monitor's menu, once every 10 minutes per monitor. Watching and flagging posts is free, and so is commenting from filtrat.

Saving commenters and likers of popular posts is charged per person found, within a monthly limit you set. See Save commenters and likers.

Manage a monitor

On the Monitors tab, monitors are grouped by the ICP they judge for. Use a monitor's menu to Check now, Edit monitor or Delete, and the pause button to Pause or Resume it. Edit monitor changes everything you set when you created it: the name, keywords, how far back it looks, filters, how often it checks, the ICP it flags posts for, and who it saves to a list (authors, commenters, likers, signals only, and their limits).
